Tumblr: First impressions

I’m going to break down and say that I like SuperTwitter Tumblr… a lot. I was seriously on the fence for the past couple of months while I tried to wrap my brain around yet another social media platform. As always, there’s always a period of time where I debate whether this is going to take off, or whether it’ll fade into obscure irrelevance. As always, mass adoptions and key features are what have convinced me that this is really worth spending my time on.

What’s Good:

I love the Tumblr Firefox plugin that allows me to post from anywhere on the web. Yes, this has been done before (Delicious, Wordpress, etc.)- but never has it been so simple and beautiful.

Being able to switch themes at the drop of a hat and have a half-way decent looking page is definitely a plus.

The interface is so ridiculously simple to use I probably will invite my mom, along with the rest of my family. Tumblr is PERFECT for the “lifeblog” format. None of the overhead that Wordpress requires, all of the fun photo/video/quote features that I can see my family and friends really getting into.

It integrates with Facebook, Twitter, and the other social media tools that I use. That’s huge.

What’s Bad:

My first and only major gripe is that Tumblr is … well, it’s Tumblr. It’s micro-blogging. Even though it’s done supremely well, it’ll never replace a well designed Wordpress theme in my opinion. This might change in the future as Tumblr gets expanded, modules begin to grow, etc… but ultimately, this will always be a watered down hybrid between Twitter and Wordpress.

What I love about Tumblr is always what I hate. If Tumblr stays this way, it’ll always be controversial… and popular.
